Pursuit of Excellence!

Excellence“Life is not easy for any of us.  But, what of that?  We must have perseverance and, above all, confidence in ourselves.  We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.” ~ Marie Curie, discoverer of Radium and double Nobel Prize winner

We’d ALL like to achieve excellence, personally and professionally right?  Perhaps, but for us to be excellent at something or even – just great – for that matter, we have to practice. Put in time and “do the work” as the amazingly profound Iyanla Vanzant often says.  If we want something bad enough, we’ll work at it, follow through on commitments and make decisions.  While many things can happen overnight, success typically does not (unless you win the lottery and for this, we have to play the game to win).

Preparation is essential.  The unstoppable, dynamic professional tennis athletes, sisters Venus and Serena Williams practiced their craft vigorously as children and they have gone on to win Olympic Gold medals and countless Championships – and are still winning! Practice made perfection for them.

Many of us get hung up on the first loss or rejection we encounter.  We take it personal as an attack against us. We get angry, frustrated and then quit.  What if we changed our thought process and our expectations to hit small milestones at a time instead of pressuring ourselves to hit the GOLD at the first shot? I’m not saying it’s impossible to achieve quick wins and I’m not saying to settle for mediocrity.  If we set ourselves up properly, anything is possible.  Getting intentional about our excellence and working at it consistently, not giving in to what might “look like” failure, will surely lead to success.

I personally had to get over my own fear of SUCCESS!  It sounds crazy but with each goal I set, while I felt they were ordained for me, I secretly prepared myself to be satisfied with where I was just in case I didn’t accomplish what I set out to.  I got over that and when I did, I started to speak into existence what I wanted to achieve; I’d then tie a date or timeframe to it and even a monetary benefit and then I would achieve it!  Even today still after hitting huge strides, I think to myself, “WOW!”

I want you to answer these questions of yourself – Am I doing what I love? What am I most proud of doing?  Am I great at it?  Am I getting paid for it?  If not, can I/do I want to get paid for it?  What is in my way? What is working for me?  This is not an exhaustive list of questions but a few to help get you started with setting attainable goals.  The goal here is to get you “writing down” what you want to achieve and how you’ll plan on doing so.

As the world continues to change, I encourage you to build your competence.  You don’t know what you don’t know… so, continue your learning!  Change your perspective on some things.  Replace your “I can’t”, “I didn’t”, “I don’t”, “I’m not sure”, “what if they don’t like me”, “what have I got myself into” with confidence!  If you don’t believe it for yourself, no one else will.  Affirm yourself daily with “I can”, “I will”, “I do”, “I am”.  You have what it takes within you.  Accept it. Embrace it and work it.

Excellence is within you!

Peace & Blessings,
